Back in winter of 2019 our outdoor security cameras began capturing videos of a black cat coming onto our property searching for something to eat. We felt so bad for the cold, hungry cat that we started putting food out for him. We would see him on the videos coming and eating and then leaving. Any time we would go outside he would run away.
We kept trying to win him over with food, but the weather was getting colder and he wasn't letting us get any closer. We decided that it would be in his best interest to set a live trap and get him in out of the cold and snow.
Eventually we were able to catch him and bring him inside. He had to be in quarantine, so we put him in a room by himself with food, water, and a litterbox. We didn't see him for days because he would hide as soon as he would hear us coming towards the room.
After he was done being quarantined and had his visits to the vet we let him out into the rest of the house with our other cats. It took a couple of months, but he finally starting bonding with the other cats. Us humans were still scary, but it was amazing to see him open up and start to play with and befriend the other cats. We just kept patiently waiting for him to decide we were okay.
Finally, seven months after bringing Mystery into our home he started to let us pet him. It soon moved to him sleeping in bed with us every night and following us around. He always wanted to be with us and starting coming to us when we called his name.
With a little patience and a lot of love we took in a cat that would be considered "unadoptable" because he was "feral" and would most likely have been euthanized, and he showed us that every cat deserves a chance.
Now Mystery is the friendliest boy and the ambassador of and inspiration for Mystery's Haven!
Mystery caught outside on our security camera before he came to live with us.
